// Boutique island retreat Mirihi Island, Maldives, is pleased to unveil a new fishing and sushi-making excursion, the ‘Sea to Roll’ experience. Set to delight adventurers and foodies alike, guests will uncover the art of sushi-making while using fresh fish caught by them during a fishing trip that very morning.
Participants will head out for an early morning private fishing trip aboard one of Mirihi Island’s traditional, fully-equipped Maldivian Dhoni boats. Fishing-rods and bait in-hand, guests will cruise across the calm turquoise waters of the open Indian Ocean to the backdrop of the rising sun.
After a lesson from Mirihi’s experienced crew on trolling fishing techniques, aspiring anglers can try their hand at catching a skipjack tuna, mackerel tuna, wahoo or – as the captain expertly steers the boat closer to the reef – even an elusive jackfish, barracuda or two.
With their catch of the day chilling on ice, guests will return to shore just in time for lunch, where they will put together a sushi feast at Mirihi’s Ruhgandu wine lounge, under the expert guidance of the island’s sushi chef. Guests will learn to make several kinds of sushi including maki, nigiri and sashimi, combining their catches with rice and local produce including mango, papaya and seaweed, before enjoying a beachside lunch to indulge in the fruits of their labour.
Participants of the ‘Sea to Roll’ experience will also receive a Mirihi apron, a sushi-rolling mat and a book of recipes, allowing them to wow dinner party guests with their newfound sushi-making ability once they have returned home.
Those who do not eat raw fish need not fear; guests also have the option to skip the sushi lesson and have their fish prepared and cooked to their liking by chefs at Mirihi‘s Dhonveli restaurant. From curries and stews to poached or simply-grilled with vegetables, there is a fish dish for every palate at the sand-floored restaurant.
Mirihi is a bare-foot luxury, boutique hotel located in the South Ari Atoll, only a 30-minute sea plane from Male, Maldives. A private island fringed with white sand beaches and crystalline waters, Mirihi Island has just 37 villas – creating a haven of peace and tranquillity.
